How to Wash Off Your Halloween Makeup

Tips for Washing Off Our Halloween Alter-Egos

Each year, we get excited to plan our costumes, dress up, and become someone else for a night. Whether it’s Frankenstein, Dracula, or even Avatar (we all know we secretly want to paint ourselves blue!) taking off the layers of makeup, eyelashes, fake blood, etc. at the end of the night can be a huge hassle. So to help keep your Halloween happy long after the trick-or-treating is over, here are some tips to remove your Halloween makeup, safely and thoroughly, in a few easy steps.

Tip #1: Familiarize yourself with the type of makeup you are wearing

In many instances, people buy their Halloween makeup without giving it a second thought. However, reading the instructions and directions for the product will warn you of oily, greasy ingredients. Using a water-based makeup product will come off more easily than an oil-based product. However, a water-based product will also sweat off easier, so if you plan on dancing the night away, an oil-based makeup may be your best choice.

Tip #2: Purchase the correct makeup remover for the Halloween makeup you’re wearing

When removing Halloween makeup, always start with a cleanser and water, like our Cell Refresh Hydrating Cleanser. After washing several times, if there is still a residue left from the makeup, try using baby oil to wipe away the residue.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Angelina Avollone advises, “a lot of body colors like red, green, and dark blue are very pigmented and they do stain.” Stocking up on cotton balls, Q-tips, foaming cleanser and facial wipes will make it much easier to remove the makeup without leaving a yellowish tint behind.

Also, if wearing any prosthetics, apply with the directed adhesive, and remove with the recommended adhesive remover. If the prosthetic or faux facial hair does not have a recommended type, you can use an oil-based substance like olive oil. The key is to go gently and slowly. Take your time or you may pull off a layer of your skin. Ouch!

Tip #3: After removing your makeup, use your regular face wash for a cleansing effect.

Once the makeup is removed, it is always a good idea to wash your face with your regular facial cleanser. It will remove the makeup from your pores leaving you with a fresh face that will show no sign of makeup in the morning. And don’t forget to use a toner after to restore the proper pH levels of your skin

Tip #4: Moisturize your skin to avoid dryness and irritation (which can led to breakouts!)

Your skin has just been through the ringer! Soothe it by using a calming, hydrating moisturizer to help avoid irritation and redness, like our Cell Renew Moisture Complete. If your skin is really irritated, apply Neosporin Cream to your face prior to your moisturizer.

Tip #5: If your makeup rubbed off on more than just your skin, like your costume or furniture…

Dab a small amount of makeup remover or alcohol on an area of the fabric that won’t be seen to test if it will affect the color. If the color hasn’t changed after 10 minutes, put makeup remover or alcohol on a washcloth and dampen the stain. Then use dry paper towel to blot it until it no longer picks up any makeup. Treat with stain remover and wash in warm water.

So this year, when all of the trick-or-treaters have gone to bed and the last Jack-o-Lantern candle has been blown out, you can remove your makeup with ease, transforming back into yourself once again.
